Lok Vikas connects Dharavikars to Govt welfare schemes
Mumbai Dec 6 (UNI) Over 300 residents of Dharavi in central Mumbai have gained access to critical government welfare schemes through Lok Vikas, an initiative by the Dharavi Social Mission (DSM).
Held on October 19 and November 16, two Lok Vikas events facilitated the enrolment of 197 individuals, some benefiting from multiple schemes. The initiative has already brought medical insurance benefits worth Rs 10 crore (approx.) to over 300 families in the area.
In a locality where most people work in unorganised sectors, welfare programmes like Ayushman Bharat, E-Shram Card, and Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana provide much-needed financial and health security. However, challenges such as lack of awareness and fears about cybercrime often prevent residents from accessing these benefits.
Umesh Sonar, a participant, shared how Lok Vikas eased the enrolment process for him and his wife Pushpa into Ayushman Bharat. “Earlier, we were afraid to register due to misuse of Aadhaar and cybercrime concerns. With DSM’s help, we felt safe and confident.”
The programme’s impact goes beyond just enrolment. For many, it represents a lifeline to essential social protections. “I enrolled in the E-Shram Card scheme and found the process smooth. Many people are unaware of these benefits, but Lok Vikas ensures we don’t miss out,” said Silarbee Shaikh, a 48-year-old cook.
Dharavi Social Mission’s inclusive approach addresses the barriers residents face, offering free, secure assistance to enrol in welfare programmes. Social worker Bhagyalakshmi highlighted its importance: “For many, these schemes are a safety net. DSM is making sure no one is left behind.”
With more events planned, Lok Vikas aims to expand its reach, bridging the gap between government welfare schemes and the people of Dharavi. By creating awareness and unlocking benefits, DSM is strengthening the community and building a foundation for a more secure future
